Oregon Trail Adventure

Teachers – is your class studying Northwest Coastal Salish People and Washington State history? Do you want them to practice critical thinking skills, learn about our forest ecosystems, and engage in an immersive living history adventure? Embark on an exciting Oregon Trail Adventure that takes your students back in time! Experience the pioneer journey while learning about the rich indigenous history and the importance of environmental stewardship at Juel Park and Farrel-McWhirter Park!

Students will begin by considering various motivations for people traveling west, and make choices to outfit their group at our trading post. Then, we will learn about how interactions between settlers and indigenous peoples affected both groups, and the environment in the region. Along the way, we will face decision-making and critical thinking challenges similar to what real settlers faced, and will have the opportunity to practice important leadership skills while working within their small groups. Upon returning to Juel Park, students will celebrate the completion of their adventure. They will reflect on their experience, acknowledge the legacy of the indigenous people of the region, and make a commitment to respect and preserve the environment for future generations.
